Jamarcus Rose & Da 5 Bullet Holes Movie Review: Stolen Dreams

Dreams snuffed out before they get a chance to come to life.

Featuring Duane Ervin as Jamarcus Rose, this film is a heartfelt depiction of young lives taken with no mercy or consideration. Jamarcus Rose, a talented high-school baseball prospect, is signed to the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America program. A decision made by his sole guardian, his grandmother (Ruthie Austin), who encourages him to spend the day with his mentor Jasper (Stephen Cofield Jr.). His grandmother, though full of love and encouragement, feels inadequate, feeling that Jarmarcus should have a man guide him through this stage of life. Preventing him from losing track of his life. Though reluctant, Jarmarcus ends up enjoying time with Jasper. A day that should have ended well ends with wounds and an unfulfilled dream.

Written and directed by Marcellus Cox, this film is a significant addition to the film industry. Many young black lives have been taken similarly, yet no one raises awareness against such. Families are left in mourning, wondering what could have been. Some end up not living long enough to figure out their dreams. This movie, though devastating, is evenly paced, leaving room for viewers to sit with the reality of young black people living out their lives with fear. The whole crew created a masterpiece with this short film. Being brave enough to share. A filmmaker not scared to show truths and purpose. This narrative touches on many lives affected similarly to Jamarcus Rose. A powerful introduction to the film industry by Cox, hoping for more that also uncover events not brought to life.
