With a powerhouse of a cast, The Wrecking Crew is an entertaining comedic action film worth watching. Two estranged stepbrothers brought together after the death of their questionable father have to try setting their differences aside. The two couldn’t be more opposite. However, with their differences, they choose to search for the truth about the mysterious death. Where one lacks, the other compensates for it.
Johnny and James Hale, a duo with good chemistry, are played by Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista, hence the powerhouse reference. I don’t think any other actors would have fit the characters as well as these two did. The two couldn’t be more in sync, having more chemistry than some romance film; of course, in this case, it was purely sibling chemistry. Momoa gives the unruly last child with trauma, while Bautista plays the older, disciplined voice of reason brother. This brings balance into the narrative from chaotic scenes to slightly peaceful ones, but make no mistake, Bautista has his moments. The sibling squabble they had in therapy, of sorts, happened to be cute and slightly bloody.
With a combination of a fast and steady pace, the wrecking crew captures viewers’ attention from start to finish. Fighting scenes accompanied by a humorous moment settle the built-up tension. One scene may be problematic for some viewers due to cultural insensitivity, as Johnny’s attempt to speak Spanish to his Portuguese girlfriend sparks tension. I want to conclude by saying this film is utterly worth viewing. The setup and the vibe were well-executed as well. This film is a beautiful combination of emotional trauma, solving crime, and Johnny doing what he wants.
A blend of humor, trauma, and crime‑solving makes The Wrecking Crew a worthy watch.
