A whole world and unshared truths come to life when Anna finds herself in Nightfall. After the death of her mother and her disappearance for a whole year with no recollection of where she was, her former fight trainer and mom’s friend tells her to go to Nightfall. Getting to Nightfall is a challenge in itself, but when she does, her acquaintances start disappearing. One thing stands out, though: the Arkai know something, but they won’t share.
Alayna Ravenwood’s world-building is rich, creating a three-dimensional depth that shapes the characters surrounding her and their actions. As a world builder, this really had me in awe. Having a structure whereby rules for magic and the society stay consistent, creating a solid plot. This book demands the readers’ emotional investment, as the stakes are high and the secrets the Arkai hold seem higher.
Although sometimes Anna’s character is a bit reckless, the author builds on a character with a psychological justification for her need for control and curiosity. This creates an understanding for her relentless pursuit of truth. Ravenwood writes in a descriptive manner, disclosing enough to keep readers guessing while connecting the dots, but we realize that the narrative is fully in the hands of the characters.
